The Fox Standard: Transforming Coastal Landscapes in Cocoa Beach

Posted on April 13th, 2026.

At Fox Outdoor Solutions, we believe every property deserves a landscape that reflects the unique spirit of its community. Today, we’re spotlighting one of our favorite service areas: Cocoa Beach. Known for its world-class surf and iconic pier, Cocoa Beach also has a rich, evolving history of how it handles the greenery that frames our coastal life.

A Glimpse into Cocoa Beach History

From its early days as a small settlement after the Civil War to its explosion during the Space Age, Cocoa Beach has always had to balance development with the Atlantic's salt air and sandy soil.

The city was officially established in 1925, but it truly found its wings in the 1960s. As NASA’s Kennedy Space Center grew, Cocoa Beach became the playground for astronauts and their families. This "Space Age" influence is still visible in the mid-century modern architecture and the resilient, low-maintenance landscapes that define many of our local properties. You can explore more of this timeline through the City of Cocoa Beach History archives.

The Evolution of Landscaping & "Green Infrastructure"

Historically, the city’s landscaping has moved toward sustainability. A prime example is the Minuteman Causeway Green Infrastructure project. What was once just asphalt and concrete has been reimagined with:

  • Rain Gardens: These use native coastal plants to filter stormwater before it reaches the Banana River Lagoon.
  • Permeable Pavers: Allowing rain to soak into the ground rather than running off into canals.
  • Salt-Tolerant Native Species: Think Sea Oats, Wax Myrtle, and Saw Palmetto—plants that don’t just survive the salt spray; they thrive in it.

Coastal Plantings: The Cocoa Beach Palette

To achieve the Fox Standard beachside, we select hardy, salt-tolerant plants that can handle the wind and the sand. For the best scientific and care information, we look to high-authority botanical resources like the University of Florida (UF/IFAS) and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Signature Coastal Palms

Native Coastal Plants & Shrubs

  • Sea Grapes (Coccoloba uvifera): These have iconic, large circular leaves and produce fruit that local wildlife loves. They are excellent windbreaks and highly salt-tolerant.
  • Blanket Flower (Gaillardia pulchella): A colorful, drought-tolerant native wildflower that adds a pop of red and yellow to sandy borders.
  • Firebush (Hamelia patens): Known for its tubular red flowers, it’s a favorite for local butterflies and hummingbirds and holds up well in the Florida heat.

Downtown Staples & Legacy Shops

If you’re walking the streets, make sure to stop by some of these long-standing institutions:

  • Salty Sisters Bar & Grill: A fantastic downtown spot that perfectly captures the vibrant spirit of the Cocoa Beach community.
  • The Cocoa Beach Pier: Built in 1962, it remains a reminder of the city's early tourism roots.
  • The Dinosaur Store: A downtown staple since the 90s, giving the city its quirky, family-friendly character.
  • Lori Wilson Park: An essential 32-acre oceanfront park for seeing preserved maritime hammocks and native flora in their natural state.

The Surf Shop Icons

  • Ron Jon Surf Shop: Founded in 1963, it’s the world’s largest surf shop and a 24/7 landmark.
  • Quiet Flight Surfboards: A local legend since 1972, known for boards ridden by champions like Kelly Slater.
  • Catalyst Surf Shop: The go-to downtown spot for high-performance gear and coastal apparel.
