Hurricane Landscape Prep: How to Protect Your Property Before the Storm

Hurricane Landscape Prep: How to Protect Your Property Before the Storm
Posted on June 3rd, 2026

Living on the Florida coast means hurricane season is just a part of life. While we all know to stock up on water and batteries, your landscape needs a game plan, too. High winds, heavy downpours, and flying debris can turn beautiful trees and shrubs into major liabilities overnight.

Taking a few proactive steps right now can mean the difference between a minor cleanup and thousands of dollars in property damage. Here is how to prepare your landscape for a hurricane.

1. Prune with Purpose (Don't "Lion's Tail")

Properly maintaining your trees and large shrubs is the absolute best way to prevent storm damage. Wind needs to be able to flow through your trees, not hit them like a solid wall.

  • Remove the Weak Links: Cut away dead, dying, or structurally compromised branches that could easily snap in high winds.
  • Thin the Canopy Safely: Lightly thinning the inner branches allows intense winds to pass through the canopy cleanly, reducing the risk of the entire tree blowing over.
  • Avoid Over-Pruning: Never "hatrack" your trees or trim them down to bare sticks. This weakens the tree’s structure, makes it top-heavy, and actually increases the likelihood of failure during a storm.

2. Secure Loose Assets and Projectiles

When winds pick up, anything not rooted in the ground can become a dangerous projectile.

  • Clear the Yard: Move potted plants, patio furniture, bird feeders, and garden decorations into a garage or shed.
  • Manage Landscaping Materials: If you have lightweight plastic edging, loose decorative items, or unanchored structures, make sure they are secured or stored away. Heavy mulch can wash away, but hard plastic or stone elements can cause physical damage if tossed by the wind.

3. Check and Clear Drainage Paths

An often-overlooked part of storm prep is managing where massive amounts of water will go. Blocked drainage leads to instant flooding, which rots root systems and compromises the stability of your turf and trees.

  • Make sure downspouts are clear and directed away from your home's foundation.
  • Ensure that decorative rock beds, swales, and natural drainage pathways are free of overgrown weeds, leaves, and debris so heavy rainfall can recede quickly.

4. Turn Off Your Irrigation System

It sounds simple, but remember to shut off your automatic sprinklers ahead of the storm. The ground will be completely saturated by rainfall. Adding extra water to the soil before or right after a hurricane softens the earth, making it much easier for large trees to uproot in high winds.
