Melbourne Fertilizer Ban: Rules Explained

Melbourne Fertilizer Ban: Rules Explained
Posted on April 30th, 2026.

Whether you are a homeowner in Melbourne, Suntree, or living Beachside in Satellite Beach or Indialantic, keeping your lawn green while protecting our local waterways is a top priority. In Brevard County, we take our water quality seriously — especially when it comes to the Indian River Lagoon.

Here is everything you need to know about the Melbourne fertilizer ban and the rules for 2026.

The Big Date: June 1st – September 30th

The most important rule for every resident in Melbourne and the surrounding beachside communities is the summer blackout period.

Prohibition: From June 1 through September 30, the application of any fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus is strictly prohibited.

Official Rules: View the full city-by-city breakdown via the UF/IFAS Brevard County Fertilizer Ordinance Chart.

Year-Round Rules for Brevard County

Even outside of the summer ban, there are permanent rules to keep in mind.

1. The 15-Foot Buffer Zone

In the City of Melbourne and most beachside areas, you must maintain a 15-foot fertilizer-free zone from any body of water.

Details: See the Town of Melbourne Beach Stormwater Management page for more on how these zones protect our coastline.

2. Nitrogen & Phosphorus Requirements

Outside of the blackout dates, your fertilizer must contain at least 50% slow-release nitrogen. Phosphorus is banned year-round unless you have a certified soil test proving a deficiency.

  • Testing: Request a professional soil test through the UF/IFAS Extension office in Cocoa.
  • Product Guide: For compliant products, see the Guide to Ordinance-Compliant Fertilizers.

Quick Reference Guide

  • Blackout Dates: No fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus may be applied between June 1 and September 30. For more details, visit the Lagoon Loyal Tips page.
  • Nitrogen Type: Any fertilizer applied outside of the blackout period must contain a minimum of 50% slow-release nitrogen, in compliance with Brevard County Code.
  • Water Buffer: A 15-foot no-fertilizer zone must be maintained around all bodies of water year-round. Full guidelines are available on the Melbourne Beach Rules page.
  • Grass Clippings: Always keep grass clippings out of drains and streets after mowing. See the Titusville & Space Coast Standards page for additional local requirements.

Why It Matters: Protecting the Indian River Lagoon

When summer storms hit, fertilizer doesn't stay in your soil — it washes into storm drains and flows directly into the Indian River Lagoon. To learn more about the science behind why we skip the summer application, visit the Lagoon Loyal blog.

How to Prepare Your Lawn Now

Since the ban starts June 1st, the best time to strengthen your lawn is right now. By following these rules, we aren't just following the law — we're protecting the quality of life that makes the Melbourne area and our beaches such a beautiful place to call home.
